Shipping Container Hotels

International Container Cabins & Intermodal Inns

This week, we're taking a second look at exciting uses of shipping containers in hotels and hospitality. These amazing experiences are great examples of the versatility, durability, and eco-friendliness of used shipping containers and modular construction.

Heading to the land down under, we’ll check out a unique shipping container pop-up hotel concept, Contained. Built using 20 ft. shipping containers, this delightful boutique hotel experience travels through Australia’s most breathtaking wine regions. Most recently, these self-sufficient, solar-powered lodgings were touring through three of Victoria’s premier wineries. The design of these units feature neutral tones, plenty of natural light, high-end finishes, and a fold-out awning to create a peaceful covered porch.

In addition to the stunning vistas and gorgeous furnishings of these spaces, they feature innovative design to create an eco-luxury getaway with a net zero carbon footprint.

In stunning Pinamar, you’ll find this quaint oasis where art, nature, and sustainability are wed. This eco-focused glamping experience consists of two 20-foot intermodal containers, designed to minimize the environmental impact and maximize the natural resources surrounding the spaces. The minimalist design of the rooms with soft-neutral color palettes and floor-to-ceiling windows flooding the room with light complement the serene landscape. The enclosures are hermetic and have thermal insulation, allowing for more efficient heating and cooling; the use of LED lighting and natural lighting generate ample energy savings.

Dock Inn (Germany)

The Dock Inn is a mammoth intermodal container structure in a shipyard in Warnemünde, Germany. This is the first luxury hostel in Germany to be constructed with recycled shipping containers. The industrial feel of the space, with polished concrete and exposed ductwork, is delightfully complimented by bright splashes of color. The amenities here are truly phenomenal: workstations, a climbing wall, a bar, a movie theatre, and a rooftop sauna!
