Let’s be real, if you’ve been keeping up to date with my recent blog posts, you must’ve done at least one of these 3 things in the last month: fawned over the thought of hitting the town and grabbing a quick drink at one of those nifty shipping container bars, contemplated booking a stay at a glamorous storage container boutique hotel, or maybe even found yourself tempted to take part in a money wrenching shopping spree at the cargo container retail stores. But those projects, although all fascinating and innovatively exciting, don’t even scratch the surface of what’s come out of the versatile, upcycled shipping containers. The modular movement that started it all -- the pièce de résistance of shipping container buildings -- are the well known, trend-sparking Shipping Container Homes!
Now if you’re lost and haven’t quite had the chance to get sucked into my ‘shipping containers turned tourist attraction’ series, let me fill you in on what you’ve missed. Long story short, the cargo containers that have spent a majority of their life perked up on their docks have been ripped from sea and given a new, one-of-a-kind purpose. With captivating architectural projects making their rounds, designers have surely stepped up their game with these iconic, top-notch storage container homes!
If this groundbreaking idea has piqued your interest, keep on reading to see some of our favorite shipping container homes around the world.
1. Santa Barbara Shipping Container Home
With a dream in one hand, and a family hell-bent on creating an architectural masterpiece in the other, this shipping container home was born! This Santa Barbara based modern home is equipped with custom woodwork, heavy steel, and concrete, creating a beautifully coordinated balance that precisely feeds off the elegance of each material. Partnered with architectural firm AB Design Studio, Barber Builders, and SteelBlox, this one-of-a-kind project perfectly pairs the creative interpretations of each designer’s modern vision. And the tip of the iceberg -- besides the pristine chandeliers, glistening pool, and wood-encased glass railings -- are the refurbished shipping container doors that emphasize the home’s industrial vibes. I’m sure all those shipping container die-hards will get quite the kick out of this mesmerizing home!
2. PV14 House
This fascinating contemporary home, made from recycled shipping containers, gives true meaning to ‘one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.’ And after revamping 14 hunks of steel, you can truly see how this stunning house is nothing short of a treasure. Located in Northern Texas, this 3700 sq ft home has been fashioned with 3 bedrooms, each with a private bathroom, a 2 car garage, concrete floors, and exposed steel structures. Take a dip in the glamorous pool, or step out onto one of the 4 elevated balconies or massive rooftop deck to admire the breathtaking surroundings. The drastic overhangs and multitude of porches aren’t only meant to serve enchanting views, but help to shield the direct sunlight, keeping you comfortable and cozy.
3. Casa Incubo
If this enchanting house doesn’t make you wanna pack up and move to a new shipping container home ASAP, I don’t know what will! Located in Costa Rica, the designers took advantage of the 40 ft shipping container’s durability and sturdiness, implementing this design with full intent to withhold the tropical weather. The home’s pastel green containers, concrete floors, natural wood finishes, and open windows, allow for an almost fairytale-like essence. Even the soaring cedar tree seems quite mystical, greeting each neighbor with its towering beauty. And trust me, there will be plenty of neighborhood visits with this brilliant home acting as a beacon of architectural inspiration. It’s topped off with sophisticated furniture, some small modifications that allow for natural light to bleed in, and a spacious floor extension that forms a gorgeous porch. After all, a house is only as good as it’s view!
This container home may seem small, but don’t confuse it with your ordinary tiny home, because this is certainly more than your average run of the mill mobile house. Created by architect Garcia Saxe, this exhilarating home, made from two 40 ft shipping containers, is plopped down in San Jose, Costa Rica. It’s most distinctive features are the large glass windows, opening up the space and allowing for wondrous views of the surroundings, as well as a slanted roof that provides for adequate air circulation. Inexpensively made for only $40,000, this 1000 sq ft project was designed for a couple who wanted a new state-of-the-art home that wasn’t served with a side of crippling debt. Although located only 20 minutes outside of the capital of Costa Rica, don’t be fooled city dwellers, as you can see from the pictures, this isolated space is made for a more relaxing and secluded getaway.
Are you as ready to live out your modern house dreams as I am? These eco-friendly alternatives will help you do just that -- minus the regrettable feeling of draining the bank, and plus a little recognition for simultaneously helping the environment. Storage containers are one of the most regularly recycled building materials, and as you can tell from the mind-blowing projects above, it’s clearly with good reason.
