Shipping Container Storefronts: Tales from Retail

Shipping Container homes are a craze that has swept the world; as we've shared in numerous previous posts, it's clear that Intermodal Containers are a sturdy, cost-effective building material. In this article, we'll share some of our favorite storage container restaurants and pop-up retail stores. Even a popular coffee purveyor has established itself as an industry leader for shipping container retail.

Our first look is at Smoky Park Supper Club in beautiful Asheville, North Carolina. Nestled in the picturesque Blue Ridge Mountains, we see the world's largest shipping container restaurant. Built from a whopping 19  40 ft shipping containers, this chic restaurant and venue space overlooks the stunning French Broad River.

The next space that we'll look at is also a restaurant, Bareburger in Plainview, NY! Built from 11 40 ft shipping containers, this unique design floods the interior space with lots of natural light.

The next space we'll look at is actually a pop-up BMW showroom! It's true-- these phenomenal used cargo containers can also become a high-end car showroom. At the 29th Annual Burton Snowboarding Competition, Burton partnered with BMW Mini to create a pop-up luxury car display space for attendees of the event. The installation was built from three 20 ft containers and one 10 ft container.

The final retailer that we'll look at today needs no introduction: Starbucks

The worldwide coffee retailer created their first shipping container drive-thru location in Tukwila, Washington. Built from four 40 ft shipping containers, this storage container coffee shop was designed to be transportable; it was eventually replaced with a permanent location, and this location was later moved to its new home outside of Seattle! Additionally, it served as the prototype for the now 45 locations and growing that incorporate intermodal containers into their design.
